In 1979, Art Leonard and Mark Schwartz sent a letter in Cornell Alumni News and various gay magazines and publications to gay Cornell alumni. They wanted to find a way to bring together Cornellians from around the country to socialize and support each other and queer groups on campus. From the responses, the Cornell University Gay and Lesbian Alumni Association (CUGALA) began to take shape.
